I read in First Questions About Animals by Keith Faulkner (1983), the speed of a cheetah and of several other animals.  The figures provided were as follows:
Spike-tailed swift--170kph(105.5mph)
Red-breasted merganser--128kph(79.5mph)
Sailfish--109kph(68mph)
Cheetah--101kph(63mph)
Pronghorn antelope--98kph(61mph)
California sea lion--40kph(25mph)
Man--38kph(23.5mph)
Leatherback sea turtle--35kph(22mph)
Gentoo penguin--35kph(22mph)
Six-lined racerunner--29kph(18mph)
Black mamba--11kph(7mph)

The speed for the black mamba was what gave me the idea for my screen name.  However, after I checked these figures on YouTube--I measured how far such animals traveled in a second, relative to their body size--I came up with what I thought were more reliable figures:

Peregrine falcon--90kph(56mph)
Cheetah--72kph(45mph)
Spike-tailed swift--68kph(42mph)
Ostrich--64kph(40mph)
Blue-footed booby--60kph(37.25mph)
Thomson's gazelle--45kph(28mph)
Lion--32kph(20mph)
Flying fish--24kph(15mph)
Emperor penguin--18kph(11mph)
Orca--13kph(8mph)
Slender mongoose--7kph(4.25mph)
Black mamba--4kph(2.5mph)
